Typologie des noms (p.12-21)

 

  1. Définition

A. Nature du groupe nominal

• Nom propre : Barack Obama was elected in 2008.

• Nom commun : She hates carrots.

• Gérondif : Dancing is their favourite activity. (base verbale avec -ing derrière)

• Infinitif avec TO : I like to play golf on Sundays. (ici subordonnée nominale)

→ Pour savoir si c'est une groupe nominal, il faut remplacer par un nom.

 

Possibilité d'ajouter :

• THE carrots / HER carrots

• These WONDERFUL ORANGE carrots

• These carrots FROM THE MARKET

• These carrots WHICH I BOUGHT ON MONDAY.

 

B. Fonctions du groupe nominal

• Sujet

Carrots are my favourite vegetables.

• Complément

I cooked carrots yesterday.

• Attribut

My favourite vegetables are carrots.

• En apposition

My favourite vegetbles, carrots, were on sale at the supermarcker.

 

Le groupe nominal peut être remplacé par un pronom :

• Sujet : Carrots are delicious → THEY are delicious

• Complément : I love carrots → i love THEM

 

         2. Genre du nom

B. Accords et pronoms

• Have you seen the dog ? No, not since i spotted him in the garden this morning.

• My car is a beauty and her engine close to perfection.

 

Inféfinis :

• If anyone calls, tell him i'll be back soon.

• If anyone calls, tell him or her i'll be back soon.

• If anyone calls, tell them i'll be back soon.

 

Connaître la catégorie d'un nom permet de déterminer :

• S'il est possible de le mettre au singuler ou au pluriel

• Comment accorder le verbe

• Comment choisir les pronoms susceptibles de le remplacer

• S'il est compatible avec certains déterminants

 

           3. Le nombre

A. Les noms propres

• New York is one of the most amazing cities in the world.

• Lake Michigan is located in America.

 

• The USA, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom...

• The Mississipi, the Thames...

• The Mediterranean, the Atlantic...Ther

• The lake OF Geneva, the isle OF Wight...

 

• Les noms propres de personnes au pluriel : the Obamas, the Joneses.

• The Alps, the Rockies...

 

B. Les dénombrables

• There is a tree. / There are two trees.

• NGOs/MPs

 

Pluriels particuliers :

• Brush/brushes, potato/potatoes (cf Tableau p.15 + Prononciation p.16)

• Mots d'origine germanique : Foot/feet...

• Mots d'origine grecque ou latine : crisis/crises, criterion/criteria...

 

Mots invariables (connaissent l'alternance pluriel/singulier mais la même forme au pluriel et au singulier) : means/means, sheep/sheep...

• We've lost a sheep. / Three sheep were killed last night.

• This means was efficient.

• People were frightened by the storm.

• My sheep was lost. / My sheep were lost.

 

C. Les indénombrables singuliers.

• Ø Water

• ≠ one water*

 

Catégories sémantiques (cf p.17-18) :

• Matières : air, mud, blood...

• Jeux et sports : Billiards, football, darts...

• Couleurs : white, red...

• Langues : French, English...

• Ensemble : Advice, furniture, hair... (souvent, ils sont traduits par un pluriel en français)

 

Impossible d'employer l'article A/AN avec des indénombrables : pour distinguer une unité, impératif d'utiliser un dénombreur (cf p.18).

• A piece of advice/bread ≠ an advice* / a bread*

 

(* = pas correct grammaticalement).

 

Dénombrement impossible pour certaines catégories sémantiques (cf p.18) :

• Etats (dérivés d'adjectifs) : happiness, anger, stupidity...

He was in a mad anger* (he was madly angry)

• Actions (dérivés de verbes) : cooking, swimming, drawing...

• Noms en -ICS (désignant des domaines de connaissances) : Politics, Economics, Mathematics...

 

• This milk comes from the farm next door.

• Billiards was the game of kings.

• Politics is fascinating.

 

Attention :

• Cas de « news ». Marque apparente de pluriel (s) mais indénombrable au SINGULIER.

I heard it on the news.

This is an amazing piece of news.

 

• Painting is my favourite past time. (activité de la peinture)

• I love Anna's paintings. (des tableaux)

 

D. Les indénombrables pluriels

• Objets doubles : glasses, trousers...

Dénombrement possible : a pair of glasses/trousers

 

• Autres : clothes, stairs, savings...

Attention : traduction en français souvent par un d énombrable singulier

Ex : He fell down the stairs : il est tombé dans l'escalier.

She emptied the contents of her bag : elle a vidé le contenu de son sac.

 

E. Les collectifs

• Audience, company, crowd, family, government, minority, public, staff...

• The team was congratulated by the president.

The teams were congratulated by the president.

 The team were congratulated by the president.
